Supernatural University: Calling All Angels

This is the first of two articles exploring angels in the Supernatural universe. In this one, I'll be looking at the role angels have played and how that developed through the history of the series, including how angels relate to monsters and humans, and how I think their role has both meshed with and changed the show's “bible” over time. In the next article, shifting from the general concept of angels to the specific, I'm going to explore in detail the unique role of Castiel and put forward my own theories on his nature and purpose. Welcome to a multidisciplinary Supernatural University session in myth, theology, philosophy, psychology, and the nature of television production!

Next up: my review of the season finale, in another few days. But I'll say this straight up: I think the finale was only part three of a four-part chapter in the current story. We don't know how that chapter really ends yet, and I won't judge it as complete until I've seen 7.01.

2011 Supernatural Paley Festival Panel

The DVD of the 2006 Supernatural PaleyFest panel is one of my most cherished possessions, so being able to attend the 2011 panel was a dream come true. And it was every bit as great in reality as it was in the dream.

I've written up the whole experience. This has spoilers, because I'm going to share every little detail I can remember from the advance clip they showed from the Western episode, so prepare to shield your eyes!

Why do some people crave spoilers, and others hate them? What drives spoiler junkies and spoiler phobes, and where are you on the continuum? Welcome to a very personal psychological case study of spoiler schizophrenia at Supernatural University. Unlike previous University blogs, I’m not analyzing anyone or anything else this time: I’m under my own microscope. You can join me on the couch if you’d like, or just sit back and observe.

Supernatural Report from Comic-Con

Well, folks, my sojourn at Comic-Con 2007 is over. First off, I must say, regretfully, that I have no personal close encounters of the Supernatural kind to report. And given that there were many people there with cell phones and tiny digital cameras with video capability recording the panel, you’ve probably already seen things on YouTube, so none of this may be new to you. Oh, well – I’m going to write it anyway. I attended the panel, I had a great time, and I don’t regret having gone for a moment! I don't know whether any of my photos will turn out to be decent at all (I have serious doubts), but if any do, I'll post links.

This entry will be devoted entirely to Supernatural. I’ll do a separate one addressing the more general Comic-Con experience, as well as descriptions of the two Stargate-related panels I attended, and my reaction to the delightfully sweet and funny pilot for Pushing Daisies (although I suppose that saying that much pretty well gives away that my reaction was positive … <grin>).

Babes fed demon blood

Fight elimination rounds:

Sam dies in Dean’s arms.

I said in an earlier blog that whenever Eric Kripke and company answer one question, they raise many more, and that’s what they did with Part One of the second season Supernatural finale. That, and rip our hearts out.

The Summary

The opening scene montage played very appropriately over Boston’s “Foreplay/Long Time,” with the song itself coming in on the Impala’s radio under the beginning action. Stopping at an isolated tiny diner to pick up dinner, Sam went in while Dean waited in the car. When the music dissolved into static, Dean realized that he no longer saw people through the diner’s windows. Inside, in a disturbingly eerie replay of what the brothers found at Ava’s house at the end of Hunted, the one customer and two staff were dead, throats slit, and Dean found sulfur on the back door, but no Sam.
