Wow, great analysis. I completely agree with it all. The parallels between Jimmy and Dean were crafted well; Jimmy's heroism, his sacrifice, his story just broke my heart - and it'll certainly stick with me. And yes, I'm with you that Castiel hasn't lost his compassion but has merely been brought back in line. That last paragraph on Sam is put so very well; a great summary on how while he remains sympathetic, the tragic fact of the matter is that it is spiralling beyond his control.
I loved those angel special effects and cutting of the shots where Jimmy spoke to Castiel outside his house and outside the warehouse. Thanks for the insight on the effects; it's cool that you comment on the production in your metas! I also think the acting from all players in this episode was top-notch. That scene between Claire-Castiel and Jimmy was so heartbreaking, haunting and compelling that I've watched it several times. Even without the considerable meaning story-wise it really highlighted Jimmy's tragedy and was so raw.
Supernatural has become this awesome layered show; I think they've been striking a great balance in their depictions of many things this season and the storylines are being woven together strongly. I can't wait to see how the show proceeds. It's great entertainment and the story also speaks to us. It's made even more awesome when fans can articulate all of that so well, so thanks for the great meta :)
